The Big Draw LA Internship (posted 4/9/2012)
Following on the success of the inaugural Big Draw LA initiative in 2010, Ryman Arts will again spearhead this city-wide collaborative public engagement project this Fall 2012. Last year’s Big Draw L.A. saw over 10,000 Angelenos participate in the 60+ events across the region presented by a range of organizations: a small environmental group, mental health agency, community arts groups, large museums, and schools. The signature event, Make Your Mark in the Park was a collaboration with Exposition Park and entities located there for an public drawing activity during which 2,800+ people joined together (under the leadership of Ryman Arts drawing students and staff) to create a ½ mile panorama drawing of an afternoon at the Park. (see www.thebigdrawla.org for more information.)The aim is to raise awareness of drawing's power as tool for learning, observation, creativity, and social and cultural engagement. Event organizers use drawing to connect visitors with museum and gallery collections, urban and open spaces - and the wider community - in new and enjoyable ways.
This is a great opportunity for an intern to coordinate the organizational activity planning over the summer, building on what was developed over the past two years, and engaging community group involvement and advance publicity for this year. The Big Draw LA intern will become part of the team furthering online social networking tools, communicate with organizations to coordinate their participation, create a manual of drawing events for non-arts organizations to follow for inspiration, and work with Ryman Arts staff to coordinate volunteers from among Ryman Arts alumni and other organizations. The intern will also help conceptualize and coordinate logistics for Ryman Arts’ own public event for The Big Draw LA. The intern will also be included in all general activities of the organization including weekly staff meetings, and attendance at a Board meeting. The intern will have his/her own desk with a desktop computer and telephone, and may travel with staff to offsite meetings.
